Mission Statement
The Center for Learning and Student Support welcomes students at all stages of their academic journeys -- whether starting, continuing, or returning to college. As part of a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), the Center for Learning and Student Support aims to support and retain historically underserved populations, such as first-generation and multilingual students. Our goal is to empower, promote, and maximize the potential of each student with the help of our skilled staff of academic support specialists, writing consultants, and tutors, as well as faculty collaboration. By responding to the strengths and needs of our community members, our staff provides a safe, welcoming, and collaborative environment where students can strengthen the skills needed to thrive in their courses.
Philosophy
Created under the CASA Title V grant, the Center for Learning and Student Support believes in the power of sharing collective knowledge with students in pursuit of their scholastic growth through graduation. As Saint Xavier University enrolls and educates a significant number of first-generation students each year, our services build on our experiences as former and current students to establish rapport with students and help them utilize resources around them. Our shared knowledge is demonstrated through the peer collaboration of our writing consultants and subject tutors as well as our support staff's individualized outreach to each student.
Our academic support specialists work with students in a one-on-one or small group environment to provide additional academic assistance using strategies necessary to reach their educational goals. Academic support specialists evaluate students' academic progress in counsel with faculty to create individualized academic plans in support of their studies.
Practices conducted at SXU's Center for Learning and Student Support are provided by the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS) in Higher Education.
